The Impassivity of Stilpo"

Abstract:

Stilpo of Megara puzzled and astounded his contemporaries with his strangely calm reaction to the loss of his wife, children, and home in a sack of his native city. In this talk I investigate how Stilpo explained his attitude and how it connects to Stoic ἀπάθεια, to early Cynicism, and to the consolatory tradition.
