Abstract:

The Journey to the West is a masterpiece of Chinese literature, renowned for its literary significance and cultural depth. Among its many English translations, Anthony C. Yu's version has been widely acclaimed. However, previous research has primarily focused on qualitative analyses of translation methods, leaving its broader knowledge structures unexplored. In this talk, Dr. Liu will introduce a digital humanities approach to analyzing the knowledge networks embedded within Yu’s translation. Using ConText for LDA topic modeling and AntConc for textual analysis, this study uncovers three key channels of knowledge found in the footnotes: Confucianism, Taoism (Daoism), Buddhism. The presentation will also highlight how the text’s philosophical foundations connect with official historical sources and its role in both Eastern and Central Asian philosophical and religious studies.
